Have you been drinking?
Nathan’s POV
I got back to the car and went straight to rehearsal studio. I couldn’t believe I got her number. I was used to attention I usually got from girls. The most interesting part is that she wasn’t acting like any other girl. Of course, she went a bit flirty at the end, but it was only after she had realised she could do that without looking like a fool.
“He knows we have a gig tomorrow. He knows we need to learn the whole routine and yet he still chooses to be late. What’s wrong with you, Sykes?” Max asked giving me a slight punch in my arm.
“Nothing. Let’s do this.” I said trying not to talk about Jules or anything actually. I checked my phone before throwing it on the table, went to the others and stood in front of a mirror. Jay passed me the fake mic.
“Focus, Sykes. We have a lot to do.” he said and I just nodded.
I managed to get everything right just by the end. Basically I wasn’t even talking or goofing around that much as I used to do in every single rehearsal. Something was wrong and I could feel it. I just didn’t want to show it, so I kept everything to myself.
After the rehearsal was over, we went back to our place. Everybody of course went to sleep while I had to have a drink before doing the same. As soon as I opened the fridge to find some juice, my phone went wild and I had to pick it. It was not a text. Somebody was actually calling and I smiled when I saw who was it.
“Hi.” I said trying to act cool, like I wasn’t thinking about her or waiting for her to call.
“Hey.” I heard Jules’ voice. “What are you up to?” she said.
“Nothing. Why?” I was a bit curious.
“Well, I’m outside your house. Actually, I had left my iPod at your place. I want it back, Sykes.” I could hear she was a bit unsure about what she was doing right now.
“What are you doing there? I could’ve brought it to you. Wait, let me check.” I said closing the fridge and walking to the living room.
“Hurry up, Nathan. It’s freezing out here.” she said and I saw her iPod lying on the table.
“Here it is. Come on in.”
“No. You better come out.” She said and before I could argue, she hang up the phone. I looked at her iPod in my hand and shrugged thinking I should really go outside to see her.
Jules’ POV
I waited a few more minutes outside, rubbing my own hands. I should’ve got a jacket. What was I even thinking, going out here? It didn’t took a lot to convince my dad that I’m staying at Rachel’s tonight, so I was not afraid he’d call and ruin my night.
Nathan went outside and slowly closed the door behind him. I just stood there while he walked towards me.
“Have you been drinking?” he asked and laughed.
“No. Why?” I asked curiously, putting all the confusion in my voice.
“Well, I don’t think people normally visit their mates for things like iPod in the middle of night.” He said trying not to laugh, ‘cause appearantly I wasn’t finding anything funny in that.
But I had to agree that was a stupid move, so I just shrugged and sighed.
“Is everything ok?” He asked.
“Give me my iPod, so I could go home.” I held out my hand. He didn’t seem to be giving it back so soon.
“You did not just came here for this?” he rolled his eyes.
“I’m not kidding, Nathan. Just give it and I’m leaving. “
“No.” He got a step back obviously seeing this little act as a challenge.
“Do not make me yell in the middle of street.”
“I’m not saying you should, but we should be really careful..” I leaned a bit because he was talking a bit lower than before and as I did that, he managed to toss me over his shoulder and bring to house while I was punching his back. He did not seem to care as he brought me to the living room and dropped me on the couch. Nathan put my iPod in his pocket and left the room.
“I’m making tea.” He said before leaving and all I could see was his back going through the open door. I could’ve walked right after him, but I chose not to. I had some time to look over the room. It wasn’t that big as you thought celebrities would usually live in. It had two large couches, big screen TV and a few other things that you usually would see in any living room. It was quite messy though. You could easily tell there were only boys living in this house.
Nathan got back with two cups of tea and placed it on the table. He sat right in front of me.
“You can talk, come on. We should be able to speak about things, you know.”
He seemed to really care what was going on in my mind. How can I say anything when I don’t even know what’s happening to me?
“I just really don’t think it’s the kind of story I’d tell after a cup of tea.” I shrugged.
“It has lemon in it.” He smiled and I giggled.
“Are they.. asleep?” I asked and Nathan knew I was talking about the other guys.
“Yeah, don’t mind them. They’re tired. We all are. They won’t get up soon.”
I looked at his eyes and felt something inside me. It was like I suddenly had realised I can trust him with anything. I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to talk about it just yet.
“I’ve been really hard on myself lately.” I started talking, then took a sip of my tea. ” My grades went down, I had some problems with police that my dad doesn’t even have a clue about, I didn’t get into the university that I wanted in so badly, my friend left the country without saying goodbye and I just feel alone at the moment.”
He was listening to me not even trying to interrupt and I was thankful for that because if he had done it I probably wouldn’t be able to continue anymore.
“I guess, the reason I came here was because all of you seemed to be so friendly and all. At first it seemed like everything’s not real, so I probably just wanted to check if I wasn’t making everything up in my mind.” I sighed and drank a bit more of my tea. The hot liquid went in my throat and I felt as it was burning out everything that I had doubts about.
“Oh, maan. That’s some quality stuff.” I said, trying to make Nathan at least grin a bit. He was sitting still and looking at me, like I was about to do anything stupid. I gave up trying to be funny.
“Look, I’m sorry. You asked and I spilled everything out. It’s not like I wanted to. You wouldn’t have let me out otherwise.” I shrugged a bit irritated that he wasn’t saying anything. I was about to stand up, when he grabbed my arm.
“What?” I asked.
“Just shut up and stay low.” he said jumping out of the couch and turning off the lights really quickly. When he got back we both were leaned on the couch. I was about to ask something, when he put his hand over my mouth and pointed to the door. It was Tom. Probably getting a glass of water. He obviously had to go through the living room to get to the kitchen. He went back upstairs really soon, but Nathan didn’t even bother to turn on the lights.
“He might not be asleep yet. Let’s go.” He said.
“Where?”
“Dunno. Probably to take you home.”
“I can’t.” I whispered and he looked at me confused. ” I told my dad, I won’t be coming back tonight.”
He smirked at me.
“You did not just say that?”
“Why?”
“Well, I have an empty bedroom upstairs and since you don’t have a place to go…” Nathan was really into his idea, but I shook my head.
“No way.”
“Come on. The house is full of light sleepers. It’s not like I can do anything to you.”
I didn’t know what to do. Like he said: I had no place to go right now, but I didn’t want to stay at Nathan’s room either.
He definitely saw me hesitating.
“Fine. I’ll sleep on the matress. Are you happy now? Let’s go, before anyone else wakes up.” he took my hand and walked me upstairs before I could say anything.
“Can I have a shirt or anything?” I looked at my clothes after we entered his room.
“Yea, sure.” He gave me one of his T-shirts and I happily put it on me while he was setting the matress for himself. Soon enough I jumped into his bed and covered myself. I could feel the smell of his perfume on the pillow and everywhere else.
“Goodnight, Jules.” He said and I had to do the same obviously even if I was into continuing our previous conversation. He didn’t give any reaction to me and I wanted to know if he was thinking that I was being only dramatic back there in the living room. My problems probably seemed like nothing to him. That’s why he ended that conversation so soon. Oh, well.. It’s not like I can make a guy care.
“Same here, Nath.” I smiled and turned to the other way, so I couldn’t see him anymore. Only after a few minutes I remembered that he hadn’t given me my iPod back. I fell asleep while making plans on how to get it back straight in the morning.
